SENIOR SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Students in the 14 - 19 senior school follow an individualised qualification pathway to develop Life Skills and Essential Skills, through qualifications accredited through WJEC entry pathways and ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network). These are designed to provide a full range of opportunities to develop existing skills and to acquire new ones. The WJEC Pathways qualifications start at Entry 1 and move through to Entry 3 / Level 1 to allow for progression. Learners can build build upon their WJEC qualifications during their time in Senior School, moving from achieving an award to a diploma in one or more of the WJEC pathways.

ASDAN provides a framework of activities through which personal, social and independence skills can be developed and accredited for those with severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). Within Senior school two ASDAN qualifications are offered:

  • ASDAN Transition Challenge provides a learner centred, activity based framework where essential skills are developed through all six areas of learning and experience. This is offered in years 10 and 11.
  • ASDAN Towards Independence which offers formal recognition for small steps of achievement towards a larger goal. Modules can be used separately and accumulated to build a record of personal achievement. This is offered in years 12, 13 and 14.

The WJEC entry pathways are a suite of qualifications starting at entry 1 and progressing to entry 3, which include independent living, personal and social education, personal progress, mathematics, ICT users and many more. Throughout their time in senior schools learners may achieve one or more entry level certificates and continue to build upon on this qualification to achieve an award or diploma.

Work related Education and Careers Guidance

Work related education is an important part of the ‘Life Skills’ course in the senior school, where possible it provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop skills in a work place environment . The school works in partnership with other organisations within the community, such as Careers Wales to help the students and parents make suitably well informed choices about their future.
